Who was this man from Alden we talked to?

Postby Tom Young » Wed Jul 28, 2010 10:53 am

We were under sail working our way through the Fox Island Thoroughfare(Penobscot Bay Maine) when he came alongside in an aluminum launch named MARBLEHEAD.

We were short tacking our way so couldn't stop to chat.

He said, "It's nice to see an old Alden boat so well cared for. I worked at Alden Design for the last 7 years before it dissolved. I have copyright(I think he said) to all the designs still. Keep up the good work".

Then he was gone seeing we needed to tack at that point. No time for his name or other details. Anyone know who he is?

Could it have been Niels Helleborg? (Although he was with Alden Designs much longer than 7 years.) But he has set up in Salem next to Marblehead, and seems to have the all designs for license.

Don Parrot was with Alden for a very long time, and his brother Hartley (?) has/had a Challenger in Hancock. We met him in the Benjamin River several years ago. Don authored the book on Alden Designs.

Tacking through the Fox Isl thoroughfare several years ago inspired me to add a (discrete) main sheet traveller to Whisper.
